Stuhrling Original Specialty Grand Regatta Dive Watch Review

April 3, 2016 by Matthew Catellier 1 Comment — Updated on January 22, 2024

Stuhrling Original "Specialty Grand Regatta" Dive Watch Review

One of the biggest hassles of watches with a marine theme or marine function is that they often try too hard. They really do. It’s as if the designers of the watch were tempted to slap a sign telling prospective buyers that they should only buy the timepiece if they are going to spearfishing, snorkeling, or are otherwise serious marine sports fans. Thankfully, the Stuhrling Original Men’s “Specialty Grand Regatta” Dive Watch doesn’t suffer from this all too common design issue.

Budget Dive Watch

To be fair, I wouldn’t want to be in the shoes of the typical marine watch designer. I really don’t. Why? They are on a tightrope. On the other hand, they want to be credible in their designs. They want to show real marine sports aficionados-ranging from yacht captains to the more leisurely beachside water sports crowd-that their marine watches are up to snuff. From this side of the equation, there is a lot of pressure to put lots of gauges and bells and whistles to ‘prove’ to the prospective buyer that they are buying a ‘real marine’ or ‘real dive’ watch.

On the other end of the equation, casual buyers also exert pressure. At this side of the market, prospective buyers are looking for all the attitude of an active marine lifestyle but aren’t really looking for all the built-in equipment because most of them wouldn’t be found within ten miles of the closest beach. They want the sizzle and appeal of the steak so to speak without the blood and fat of steak done rarely.

Thankfully, the designers behind the Stuhrling Original Men’s “Specialty Grand Regatta” have found a great balance. It has enough features of a real regatta watch while not going overboard.

“Specialty Grand Regatta” Movement Type

I don’t think you need me to remind you that dive watches, as a whole, tend to burn a hole in a timepiece buyer’s pocket. This category of watches doesn’t exactly have a reputation for being accessible in terms of price. This is especially true for automatic movement-powered dive and marine watches. I really wouldn’t blame you for reading this review with a slight hesitation because you don’t want to scroll down and get disappointed by the hefty price.

Thankfully, you don’t have to worry about paying an arm and a leg for a decent marine watch. This regatta watch comes in at the very economically democratic price of $69. Not bad, right? Not bad at all. How did Sturling pull this off? How did the designers of this watch deliver a solid watch without cutting back on quality? Simple-Swiss Quartz technology. You get Swiss precision without the expense of an automatic movement. Quite a small price to pay for a great watch indeed.

Water resistance

When it comes to marine watches, the higher the water resistance, the better. When it comes to this special feature, the Stuhrling Original Men’s Specialty Grand Regatta watch definitely doesn’t fall flat. You get the look, bravado, elegance, class, and stylishness of a marine watch with the matching water resistance. In fact, at this depth, 200 meters, you can engage in serious surface water and moderate diving activities without worrying about your watch dying on you.

Solid marine lifestyle watch

Whether you are actually into all sorts of water sports and marine diving or you just want to look like somebody who is, the “Specialty Grand Regatta” has got you covered. Given its pricing and its feature list, it should definitely be near the top of your next marine watch shopping list.

About a month ago I bought the Stuhrling Original Men’s Specialty Grand Regatta. It has everything I was looking for at a great Price I am used to spending hundred’s of dollars on a watch and saved a bundle on this one. I am thoroughly pleased that I decided to purchase this watch. My Doctor Friend Said “WOW, WHERE DID YOU FIND A WATCH LIKE THIS.” I Smiled and Laughed and said “AMAZON” We had a nice conversation for about ten MEN. It was a nice chat by two watch Enthusiasts. You will not be disappointed.
