Bulova 96B290 Ambassador Watch Review

Bulova 96B290 Ambassador Watch Review

Bulova watches are well known for their unmatched craftsmanship. The original master craftsman, Joseph Bulova, was a known risk-taker and it is because of him Bulova was established as the innovator when it came to watch design and reliability. Over and above their aesthetic quality their watches are known to be among the most accurate in the world.

They have been around for almost 150 years which is a long time to remain relevant, particularly in turbulent environment of constant change and strong competition. The design we are working through today called the 96B290 Ambassador is less visually striking than some of the other classic models, but there is a bold quality in its simplicity.

Case and Crown

The case is made from stainless steel and takes on a tonneau-shape. The Ambassador model is true to its name in that an ambassador is somebody who is bold and sets an example. The tonneau-shape has a width of 37mm and is 44mm in length. The dimensions don’t make the watch appear out of shape but rather give it a uniquely strong character.

96B290 case and crown

The quartz movement driving the 96B290 allows for the case to be thin and therefore not too uncomfortable and bulky. The crown is fairly small and allows emphasis to be on the watch dial. The screw design helps with keeping the dust and water out of the mechanism. The Bulova logo can, as usual, be found on the top of the crown.

slim profile

The size of the case allows for a large dial and symbols to be placed without looking full. The back of the case has a brushed finished and which is engraved with the expected water resistant and model number stamps. The fact that the lugs are not protruding from the edges of the case gives it a smooth and well-constructed feel.

The dial is displayed through a mineral glass which is not as scratch resistant as sapphire crystal but it is stronger. The purpose behind this is most likely to keep the cost down while providing protection against shock damage. The watch will most likely be worn in environments where there won’t be constant risk of scratching to the face of the watch.

96B290 Dial

The dial on the 96B290 is simple yet handsome in its design. The white contrasts well on the black and makes the Roman numeral markers stand out. The only markers that isn’t a Roman numeral is at the 12 o’clock where we find the Bulova logo. The brushed black finish on the dial doesn’t have any extra markings other than the Bulova name right under 12 o’clock and the calendar feature at 3 o’clock.

handsome dial

It is important for me to point out that the attractiveness of the black dial is not lost in its simplicity. It is not as decorated as many of the other models and rather uses its classic appeal to demand your attention. If you are looking for a formal companion that is going to blend in with your attire and accentuate your classic look then this is exactly what you need. It won’t be flashy but it will definitely make you stand out.

Crocodile Strap

The strap is a black croco-style embossed strap made from leather. The black band goes with the colour scheme and the croco-style shows that even in simplicity the Bulova designers can’t completely avoid their creative flair. The band has a double-press deployant buckle that also so subtly features the Bulova logo.

Crocodile strap and clasp

The leather band makes for a comfortable wear that can take you through the whole day in the office and still be comfortable for the rest of the day at home.

The watch is water resistant to 30m but would generally be worn in situations that wouldn’t call that feature in to action. You can shower with it and keep it on when you wash the dishes but if you are looking to preserve the leather and keep the watch in pristine condition you will most likely avoid using it so rigorously.

Final Thoughts

The Bulova 96B290 Ambassador appeals to my appreciation of simple yet purposeful design. It is a very good looking watch that isn’t packed full of features and markers. The leather strap is good quality and is very comfortable which makes it comfortable for long days at the office or when out and about. The shape is appealing because it isn’t the usual round or rectangular shape either but instead a hybrid of the two. In this Bulova you are getting a watch that does its job and looks good doing it.

This timepiece brings through a boldness that isn’t easily found in many watches and at the $200 price point it is worth adding to a collection that needs a more rugged but sophisticated edge. It will go with almost any outfit which makes it a very convenient watch to have handy.

Thank you for your great description.
Do you know whether this watch is made in Hong Kong, Japan or Switzerland?
Also do you know if it is possible to purchase a spare strap?
