What comes to your mind when you hear about a wooden watch? Pretty cool right? There might be more to wooden wristwatches than just being cool. Salman Shah founded JORD in 2013, and since then, they’ve been producing various creative wood watches.
Not all watch-making brands can do this. An example of one of those innovative wood watches is the Jord Meridian which marks a new beginning in the manufacturing and construction of wooden timepieces. This is the first time a wooden watch will feature the use of steel without compromising the appearance of the wood. Let’s dive into the full review of the Jord Meridian Wood Watch and take a look at some of the striking features and construction details.
JORD In-House Mechanical Movement
The Jord Meridian Dusk is powered by the JORD JHLS32 Mechanical movement with display functions of the traditional hour, minute and seconds. The JORD JHLS32 Mechanical movement is JORD’s first dual wheel movement. It’s a self-winding movement that has 47 jewels with a power reserve of up to 40 hours. Since it’s a mechanical movement, it does not require the use of a battery for it to work. The movement operates at a beat rate of 21,600 BPH (beats per hour). Jord states that this movement keeps accuracy within + and – 40 seconds per day which is not very impressive but it’s not too bad considering the price point.
Jord boasts of the engineering of this in-house movement by creating an open heart dial that grants you a clear view of the dual wheels in operation.
Dial and Hands
The dial like other Jord watches features a unique design that’s also functional, allowing you to read the time without any hassle. Two major material finishes can be found on the dial, separating the dial into two parts. The upper part of the dial features a polished surface with applied hour markers present, the power reserve dial and “Jord ” at the 12 o’clock position. The lower part of the dial features a more serrated matte black surface finish and “automatic” at the 6 o’clock position. The dual wheels can also be viewed in motion.
Over the integrated steel case is a slightly domed Sapphire crystal which is a major feature found in luxurious watches.
Sapphire crystals are characterized by their durability and ability to withstand everyday wear and tear. The slight dome is also used to reduce light reflection so you can read time properly on sunny days.
A feature that would have perfected the watch is an application of an anti-reflective coating, but one can really request for much from a watch that costs below $500.
The Integrated Steel Case
The steel is well integrated into the watch build without compromising the visual presence of the wood. This was done by using reinforced metal at key pressure points within the case skeletal structure to increase durability and reduce wear of the case, a fused wood case is found in between the steel bezel and the steel foundation.
The Jord Meridian is not a small watch at 45mm wide and 15.65mm thick in a case that is water-resistant up to 3ATM. The watch is splash-proof but should not be immersed in water to prevent damaging the watch. It features a notched steel, stationary bezel which combines the function of reducing wear on the wood case and also complimenting the design of the crown and integrated steel links in the band.
Almost all parts of the watch are anodized, ranging from the steel band links; the lug ends, the reinforced case to the steel butterfly clasps. This helps to improve the durability of the materials used in manufacturing the watch.
On the right side of the case is a serrated screw down crown with the Jord Logo boldly engraved on it.
With a band thickness of 20mm and a width of 24mm, the watch just sits nicely on the wrist.
The watch package comes with a custom-made wood treatment gel with applicator pen to keep the watch in excellent condition. The overall packaging of the watch is lovely, it can be given as a gift to someone.
All in all, the Jord Meridian Dusk Automatic Wood Watch is a unique watch that definitely turns heads. How often do you see wooden watches? It also comes with features that you won’t find in other watch brands. Although it doesn’t come with some extra features that can be found in high-end watches, it’s still reasonably priced, offering a good value for money and most importantly, it reads time well.
