Orient Men’s EM65009D Automatic Diver Watch Review

November 24, 2016 by Matthew Catellier Leave a Comment — Updated on January 22, 2024

Orient Men's EM65009D Automatic Diver Watch ReviewDo you like to spend a lot of time at the beach? Does the idea of sun, sand, and sea make you wish the weekend arrives sooner? Do you live an active lifestyle? Alternatively, do you want to project an active, vibrant image of a person on the go?

If any of the above applies to you, you might want to consider the Orient EM65009D Automatic Diver watch. Not only does this watch bring home the clear message that you live or aspire to live a very active lifestyle, it goes beyond mere show-it actually walks its talk in terms of water resistance. Sleek, compact, and stylish, this is one diver’s watch that is sure to turn quite a bit of heads whether you are at the beach, in a boardroom meeting, or simply enjoying dinner with friends and family in a restaurant. Versatile, stylish, and sleek, this watch manages to avoid the number one challenge of watches in its category: overkill.

Diver watches suffer from the same challenges as aviator watches. On the one hand, the watch has to establish credibility from the get-go. Any truly well-made watch makes it clear that it means business upon first impressions. This means making sure the model fits the expected form factor of the watch category. Diver watches have to look like they can be used for diving, snorkeling or other maritime fun activities. This is where it can get tricky. Not unlike aviator watches, some diver watch models go overboard in ‘proving themselves’ to the onlooker and pack all sorts of unnecessary features into its compact form. The end result? An unwieldy mess. Thankfully, the EM65009D doesn’t suffer from such overcompensation.

Movement type: Affordable Automatic

Sadly, one of the most basic rules in the world of watchmaking is you can pretty much determine the price category of a particular model based on its movement. If it uses a self-winding automatic movement system free of anything made from quartz or any other substance that can provide power, the conventional wisdom is that the model would be pricey. The only question left is whether it will be reasonably costly or insanely costly. Of course, the watch’s brand plays a big role in its pricing at this stage. Still, the general rule is if a watch has an automatic movement system, expect to fork over some serious bucks. Thanks to its Japanese roots, the Orient Men’s EM65009D Automatic Diver Watch avoids this problem. Watch fans get a sleek, well-designed, diver watch with solid water resistance and an automatic movement system at a very affordable price. This watch’s features sound almost too good to be true-especially in light of its relatively low pricing. Based in Japan, Orient is one watch company you probably have never heard of before. I can’t say I blame you. After all, when it comes to watch brand powerhouses, three brands tend to suck up all the marketing and media bandwidth when it comes to Japanese watch manufacturers: Seiko, Citizen, and Casio. Well, regardless of its relative obscurity, the EM65009D, part of the Orient Ray series, showcases Orient’s manufacturing proficiency, attention to detail, and, of course manufacturing excellence.

Orient Special features: True Diver

The primary special feature of this watch is the fact that it truly delivers on its designation as a diver’s watch. It can tolerate water up to a depth of 660 feet. This is a big deal considering the fact that many of the diver watch released by more recognizable brands only manage to handle 330 feet-half the depth.
