On the centennial anniversary of the Royal Air Force, AVI-8 has released the AV-4061-01 1980’s Edition which has done a good job to commemorate the founding of one of the best air forces in the world. Not only does it look the part, but this timepiece has truly been inspired by fighter jets and the trends that came out from the decade.
The AV-4061-01 1980’s Edition is one of the better-looking pieces in the series. Its strap is made of genuine leather lining topped with Cordura which reflects the ruggedness of this type of watch. The same material, in spite the rugged look, gives a high-grade vibe considering Cordura is one of the most durable better-quality materials used in straps.
Just like any of the Centenary Series watches that came out from AVI-8, this watch pays homage to the air forces of this time. However, just like those before it, the AV-4061-01 1980’s Edition also caters to specifics unique to its name.
AV-4061-01 Classic Field Design
The AV-4061-01 1980’s Edition was inspired by field watches which was a highlight of the 80s.
Paying homage to this classic watch design, this edition of the watch features a stainless-steel casing. This is typical of the classic field watch compared to PVD coating or titanium used by those made today. In addition, with measurements that amount to 43 in case size and 18 mm in lug width, it is a well-balanced wrist watch that can be brought even in the most rugged of terrains. Adding to the edgier design that the face provides are the lugs which are chamfered to add more edge to the watch’s details.
The face of the watch is topped with a domed scratch resistant sapphire crystal, this gives the clarity that is required from a field watch. In fact, the domed shape gives you a subtle hint of magnification that may help make the dials clearer. However, with the addition of Super LumiNova Luminous Hands, such magnification may not be needed, although, a welcomed bonus.
In addition to the hands, the indices have also been instilled with Super LumiNova Luminous features. However, the dial has not. Instead, these are just white marks against a dark canvass. It would have been better if they were infused with the same technology. Although, that may take away from its uniqueness from the 1960s, which its lume shows in all its indices and dial. It is also worthy to take note how the AV-4061-01 back casing features a see-through design. This allows for anyone to see the inner workings of the timepiece which makes it a unique feature in these series of timepieces from AVI-8.
As mentioned above, the strap’s design highlight is the Curdura which tops the leather lining making it extra durable. However, the reason behind using Curdura can stem from the traditional design of a field watch. With this material, it can easily be replaced in case it gets damaged. Although all leather would be more durable, replacing it can be costlier. Moreover, this application allows the wristwatch to fit snugly around the user’s wrist. This is important, especially if you are planning to take it into rugged conditions.
Other than that, the AV-4061-01 1980’s Edition is water resistant for 40m and weighs a reasonable 95 grams.
Inspired by Air Fighter Engines
Unique to the AV-4061-01 is its second sub dial. Compared to the traditional wristwatches with their second hand running around all over the watch’s face, this one is designed to look like a gauge like instrumentation readout.
One concern I have about this design is how only half of a minute is shown, which kind of defeats the purpose of the sub-dial but adds a touch of style. Here lies its unique feature, because, as one second hand passes the half-moon face of the sub dial, another shows up replacing it, making a full cycle; making it a full minute. Not only does this give off a gauge like appearance, but it also copies how the needle of the gauge would look like, if given the chance to make a full cycle.
In my opinion, the AV-4061-01 1980’s Edition is perfectly suited for individuals who prefer to trek or hike high altitude places. Or those who love extreme activities such as rock climbing, and although the Curdura might be a tad heavy for high intensity activities, the snug fit ensures its reliability and comfort, and its balanced design guarantees a pleasurable wear.
Final Words
As a field watch, a lot of thought has been put into its design. Inspired by the fighter engines of the decade, not only does it try to reflect the aircraft, but also the decade it represents. This time piece is a must have for any RAF enthusiast who is also active outdoors.
