Hands-On With The Accutron Spaceview 314 and Its F-Sharp Hum

What a month its been with the Fifa World Cup 2026, as an England supporter myself, I’ve been emotionally entwined with the roller coaster ride of matches all the way to the finals. Right around the beginning of the quarter finals, a very unique watch arrived to our studio, and that is of course the watch we’re reviewing today, the Accutron Spaceview 314.

As I was wearing my Land-Dweller 36 during the games, labelling it my “lucky watch”, I was also enjoying the presence of the Spaceview 314 and its revolutionary calibre Y230 tuning fork movement. Ironically, two watches that both utilize a high frequency movement, but the way both watches achieve this couldn’t be more different, the watches are essentially the opposite of each other, from movement engineering, to design, and even their functional purposes.

Accutron started off as a standalone model under the Bulova brand back when it first launched in 1960, but since then its gone through multiple brand adjustments and ownership changes. Accutron is now its own standalone brand under the Citizen group, just like Bulova is as well. This new branching off has allowed the new Accutron brand to not only continue the original line of tuning fork watches, but to also expand and add new variants.

The Obsession With Accutron

The Spaceview 314 brings with it an almost third dimension to watch design and manufacturing. There are mechanical watches, quartz watches, and a few other obscure types of movements – but the Accutron is in its own segment utilizing tuning fork technology, which is essentially achieved by swapping out the main spring and balance wheels of a mechanical movement and replacing them with electronic transistor circuitry. In addition to this, which was a massive breakthrough in 1960, both the front and back of the watch showcase the intricate circuitry with an open dial and an exhibition display back. Another signature of tuning fork Accutron’s and this 314 variant we have here, is the slight hum produced by the movement, and if you bring the watch up to your ear you can actually hear it, and it sounds a little bit like the buzz of a bumble bee.

Heritage discussion aside, as collectors, watches are suppose to evoke emotions within us, and that’s exactly what this watch does, just a little differently than normal. Instead of evoking European fine watchmaking vibes, or the perfection of an iconic sports watch, the 314 personally brings me right back to the evolution of the personal computer. To me, for both the dial and the exhibition display back, the watch resembled an old school computer chip, and for someone that’s worked in IT for many years, this brings along with it a nostalgic sense of technological evolution.

The only actual hints of modernity and calculation of time can be found on the crystal itself, as well as the outer dial ring. The sapphire crystal has the Accutron logo and emblem placed directly on it, which does not seem to be etched, at least on the outer part of the crystal, but perhaps on the inside, as when i run my fingers across it, it feels smooth. The outer section of the dial has a silver ring with both hashmarks and applied batons, with the batons being a little difficult to spot during the day due to their silver tone, but they’re lumed for night visibility.

The minute and hour hands are an interesting dauphine shape, which are pretty easy to make out against the green and metallic microchip background. The seconds hand, which we all know famously glides around the dial due to the proprietary 360hz tuning fork technology, and does indeed seem to have one of the smoothest rotations I’ve ever witnessed, is very long and slender, with an Accutron tuning fork emblem as its counter-weight.

Gazing at the dial a little longer has me looking past its resemblance to a 1970s computer chip, and more into the realm of a tweaked mechanical movement. Some of the visible parts look as though they’ve been plucked out of a mechanical movement and connected to various transistors and coils, not unlike what you’d see on a circuitry board. It’s a very peculiar look, on one hand it appears modern and cutting edge, but on the other hand it seems dated in a cool retro type of way.

Flipping the watch over reveals more about its iconic Japanese movement. It’s not as intricate and jam-packed looking as a traditional and pure mechanical movement, but it’s certainly a pretty clear hybrid of mechanical, quartz, and tuning fork. It has a fairly barren looking golden or coppery tone backplate that’s been finished with long vertical Geneva Stripes. The screws and battery are visible, and the real attraction here is the small elliptical cutout section at the top, exposing the backside of the tuning fork.

Wearability

There are no hidden secrets to the 314’s wearability. This is a 39mm watch with an average 13.4mm case thickness, and short angled lugs. It wears pretty much true to size for a 39mm watch with these stated measurements. It’s pretty excellent on my 6.5 inch wrist, but of course being the watch lunatic that I am, I wouldn’t mind if Accutron found a way to produce this watch with a thinner case, but without knowing the details I’d speculate it’s as thick as it is due to the tuning fork technology, because we all know a bare bones quartz movement would allow for a significantly thinner case. It’s very comfortable, and it looks great on wrist up close, and at a distance.

Final Inquisitions

This isn’t really a watch that you stumble upon by accident, if you’re here reading this, and you’ve done further research on the Spaceview 314, there’s a good chance you’re a big fan of the original 1960s Spaceview with the calibre 214, and you know exactly what you want. The vintage 214 is a collectors watch that’s become increasingly difficult to source in good working condition. The older model also utilizes a now obsolete battery technology, making it difficult to service without extensive mods and conversion to a more modern battery technology.

The Spaceview 314 steps in here as a solution to these problems. It provides a much higher standard of manufacturing, especially with the improved tuning fork Y230 movement. The look of the watch is very accurate to the original, with the open dial look, and if you compare them side by side in images, the 314 dial has a neater layout of components with a much higher degree of polished finishes, and an overall more visually inspiring assembly. The one caveat here being the price tag of $5990.00 USD, which is a hefty sum to digest, but you’re getting one of the most unique watches ever created in watchmaking history.
