Seiko Presage SARY075 Basic Line Watch Review

Seiko Presage SARY075 Basic Line Watch Review

The Seiko Presage SARY075 combines great style with a great value. The design of this dress watch makes it stand out, but in a way that is tasteful and classy like a dress watch should be. It is Japanese made with an in-house movement and other high end touches at a more reasonable cost. You can’t help but take a look at this watch.

SARY075 Design

The most obvious aspect of this timepiece is its stunning design, perfect for a dress watch to wear on an evening out. The dial is a light sky blue color with a sun ray design that looks great from any angle. Applied to the dial are silver hour markers that are a dauphine pitched shape, tying in the same shape as the hour and minute hands. The hour markers at six, nine, and twelve o’clock are slightly larger than the rest, making it easy to read the time at a quick glance. However, hopefully you’re wearing the SARY075 to a well lit event, as there is no luminosity to help you read it in the dark. The hour marker at three o’clock is also a slightly larger dauphine, but most of it is cut off due to the position of the date display. In a pleasing contrast to the dauphine elements, the second hand is a fils sweep with a diamond shape on the short end.

There are also minute and second stick indicators around the outer edge of the dial and every five minutes the stick indicator is slightly longer. Although the design on the face of this watch is very stunning, it might be a little hard to read the exact minute, as some of the stick indicators are missing to make way for the hour markers that extend all the way to the edge. However, the hour markers look so elegant that it is an easily overlooked flaw. Like many dress watches, the dial is relatively sparse with not too much text taking away from its classy design. In a retro looking font, it reads, ‘Seiko,’ ‘Presage Automatic,’ and also displays its Japanese origin along with the model number.

The stainless steel round case is 40.5mm in diameter, which is a bit large for a dress watch, but not so large it would look out of place on any size wrist. And at 11.8mm thick, the case might have trouble sliding under the cuff of a dress shirt, but that might just be a minor annoyance when the overall design of the watch is taken into account. As with most dress watches, the stainless bezel is stationary. A unique feature of this timepiece is the box-shaped Hardlex crystal, which is proprietary to Seiko watches. It’s a mineral crystal that at seven on the Moh’s hardness scale will likely scratch easier than sapphire, but as it is more flexible, it will stand up better to any impact. The same material is also used on the exhibition caseback.

Basic Features

The movement powering the SARY075 is a Seiko 4R35 automatic, which is an in-house movement and therefore Japanese made. Many people do not feel it is up to snuff, with ETA movements and indeed with 23 jewels the accuracy range is quite large at +45 to -35 seconds per day. However, owners of this watch have reported that it is far more accurate than that, so it might be worth taking a leap of faith on even though it’s not a venerated Swiss movement. This movement has a 41 hour power reserve, which is on the high end of power reserves for an automatic watch and would be great if you don’t plan on wearing it every day.

dial and crown

An additional feature of the movement is that it can be hacked with the push/pull crown. The crown itself is in engraved with the Seiko ‘S’. It is a slightly unusual cupcake shape with ridges that help with gripping it while winding or hacking.

To finish off the features on this watch is a strap that is as sophisticated as the rest of the design. It’s black oil tanned calfskin leather strap that is 20mm thick, the same as the lug width. The strap also features contrasting blue stitching that brings in the hue of the dial and ties the watch together. It also has a deployant buckle to keep this timepiece safe on your wrist should the buckle accidentally come undone.

Conclusion

The Seiko Presage SARY075 is a stunning dress watch that stands out while not being overly showy. Its large size may mean it’s too large to slip easily under a shirt cuff, but that just means it’ll be drawing many envious glances. It combines great style with efficient time keeping and at a relatively low price, this watch is almost a bargain. If you’re looking for a classy dress watch this one would be worth considering.
