DWISS (Design Watch Independent Switzerland), a multi design-awarded company founded by Rafael Simoes Miranda in 2011, has produced over 15 different brands of watches with most of them winning awards in their various categories. They put this experience into creating great watch pieces with the sole intention of bringing uniqueness to watch and design-lovers.
An excellent example of one of those watches is the DWISS RS1-SO Automatic watch. The RS1 collection is more of a sporty watch using DWISS’ signature time reading system. As with most new offer classic watches, it is a limited-edition watch with just 199 pieces available per color.
Let’s take a look at some of the features of this watch and some of the things that make it stand out among other watches.
316 Stainless Steel Case
The case of the watch is finished in 316L stainless steel and is carefully and excellently designed. Various parts of the case features different surface finishes. The angular lugs and the bezel top are brushed while the hexagonal head screws and the edge bezel are polished. This watch like other DWISS watches uses a 7-piece multi-layer design which gives the watch a fascinating look.
The head screw design is similar to that seen on the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. The case measures 45 mm diameter giving the watch a very bold appearance and a lot of wrist presence. Lug width is about 25mm and case thickness is 13mm which is appropriate for a 45mm watch.
Attached to the stainless-steel case is a 24mm Italian made fabric and leather strap that seems to be very comfortable on the wrist. The orange contrast stitching also improves the general appearance of the watch. The strap is well supported by DWISS designed Stainless Steel buckle and equipped with quick-release pins to enable you to change the straps quickly.
The screw down crown has the DWISS logo on it. It is also bounded with a hard rubber grip also seen on a lot of AP watches.
ETA 2824-2 Swiss Movement
The DWISS RS1-SO is powered by one of the most famous movements in the watch industry, the ETA 2824-2 Swiss Movement. The movement which features the Hours, minutes, central sweeping seconds and a date function, operates at 28,800bph. This is why the movement is considered to be a “workhorse” movement by many watch lovers. This powerful movement is well visible through the sapphire display case back.
This automatic movement has 25 jewels protected by an Incabloc Novodiac shock protection system. It also features a power reserve of approximately 42 hours when fully wound, and it’s water resistance up to 20 ATM. It is both hackable and hand windable.
This watch features the Top Grade version which can be adjusted in five positions with an accuracy of +/-4 sec/day up to +/- 15 sec/day.
Award Winning Dial
The DWISS RS1’s multi-layered dial features a unique reading system only found on DWISS watches. This time display is different from the conventional three-hand display with rotating hands that point to the hours and minutes markers. Although it might seem complicated to read at first glance, you should be able to figure it out in a few minutes.
The RS1-SO features a dual-color disc track with black and orange accents. This track rotates about the edge of the dial throughout the day to indicate the hour. The highly detailed central hand shows the minutes and seconds while the date aperture is located at the 3 o’clock position. The dial also features applied polished hour markers, the bold DWISS logo at the 12 o’clock position and little written text with on the border of the disc track showing all the watch’s specifications.
Another touch of elegance displayed by DWISS in the design of the dial is the section which shows the inner workings of the Swiss movement.
At first glance, the watch doesn’t look like one that has lume. However, the hour marker is painted in lume and also a little bit of lume on the disc track helping you to read time even in low-light conditions.
Over the dial is a Sapphire glass crystal with anti-reflective coating, as expected at this price point. At the back of the watch is an exhibition sapphire case back allowing you to catch a glimpse of the beautiful Swiss movement, a feature fast becoming a mainstay in modern watches.
Final Thoughts
This watch does not only possess an aesthetically pleasing time display but also combines it with top-quality construction, making the watch stand out even among other DWISS watches.
In addition to this, a free app was developed by DWISS available for Android and iOS devices, on which you can see the watches in 3D. This helps you to test the watch and see it virtually before purchasing it.
Overall, the DWISS RS1-SO is a unique watch and not one you see every day in the wild. The build quality is superb, and the movement is also one you can count on to read time correctly. It’s a watch that you can use as a wild card on special occasions.
